Essential Items for New Puppy Owners

Pet Insurance

To cover unexpected veterinary expenses, check with your home insurance provider, or search online.

 

Veterinarian Contact Information

Plan for your vaccinations and get the date from your breeder.

First Aid Kit - Basic first aid supplies tailored for pets.


 



Feeding

Food and Water Bowls

Stainless steel is easy to clean and the safest for your dog.

 

Food chew -bully sticks, dental chews (No raw hide)

 

High-quality puppy food formula is recommended.

Canned food can be used for lick mats and kongs

Treats – high value low calorie treats like freeze dried chicken

 

Chew toys

Rope toys, Nala puppy bones (No antlers or hard bones)

 

Crate/Kennel

A crate is sized appropriately for your puppy to use for training and a safe space.

The crate is intended for rest and will fit to stand up, turn around and lie down.

If the crate is too spacious you will struggle with potty training (some wire crates come with a divider).

 

Puppy Pen

Find a tall and sturdy pen that your puppy can not move around the room or jump out of.

 

Bedding

Comfortable, washable bedding for the crate and other resting areas. Do not recommend expensive beds. Some puppies may need a cooling mat based on their fur and the weather.

 

Collar, Leash and harness

 

Adjustable collar and a sturdy leash for walks and identification tags.

 

Identification Tags

Tags with your puppy’s name and your contact information and a dog licence.

 

Toys

A variety of chew toys, interactive toys, and comfort toys.

3x rubber kongs, lick mat, Omega treat ball and wobble kong

 

Grooming Supplies

Brush, comb, nail clippers, puppy shampoo, and conditioner, toothpaste and toothbrush

 

Puppy Pads

For indoor potty training and accidents, reusable/washer ones are available.

Some puppies chew and rip up pee pads and a tray maybe the best option.

Enzyme Cleaner, to clean up accidents and eliminate odors effectively.

 

Training Treats

Small, soft treats for positive reinforcement during training.

 

Puppy Gate/baby gate

To restrict access to certain areas of the house.

 

Poop Bags

For cleaning up after your puppy during walks.

 

Training Clicker - For clicker training methods.

 

Travel Carrier - for safe transportation.

 

Puppy Coat or Sweater- depending on the time of year.

If your puppy has short fur and you live in a cold climate.

 

Doggy Doorbell - To help train your puppy to signal when they need to go outside.
